Introduction
Your LEARN LMS can import Learning Tools Interoperability (LTI) content as learning objects into both courses and your Central Learning Object Repository. LEARN supports LTI 1.0 and 1.1 content. Please note the following distinction between the two supported versions of LTI content as it applies to your LEARN training material:
- LTI 1.0 Content. This content does not support any type of feedback to the LMS, meaning that when this content is opened by a LEARN user, the learning object is automatically marked as complete.
- LTI 1.1 Content. This content does support feedback to the LMS, meaning that the learning object in LEARN will be marked as complete when the user completes a certain percentage of the content. All quizzes that are LTI content must be 1.1.
Uploading LTI Content
Login to the platform as a Admin, access the Admin Menu by scrolling your mouse over the gear icon on the top right corner. Then, in the E-Learning section, select the Course Management item. Select a course from the list by clicking on its description, then move to the Training Material tab. Click on the Add Training Material button, then select LTI from the dropdown menu.
On the main import page, begin in the LTI tab. Add a title and description into the corresponding text boxes, then add the launch URL into the dedicated text box (remember the Launch URL format must have https protocol). Then, if necessary, insert your Consumer Key and Shared Secret into the corresponding text boxes. Please note that these credentials are not always mandatory. These credentials are only necessary if outlined by your content provider, and you should refer directly to them for this information. LEARN will not provide this information.
Then, in the Privacy section, flag whether you want to show the share launcher’s name and email in the tool. Now, in the Completion section, flag how you want to mark the completion of the object. Keep in mind that the only time that this type of learning object will be marked as In Progress is if the learning object is a quiz.
For LTI 1.0 objects, you must flag the option to complete the object upon opening the learning objects. For LTI 1.1 objects, you can flag the option to complete the object after receiving feedback from the external tool. When you flag this option, two more options will appear. These options are for quizzes or for learning object completing purposes.
Begin by setting the minimum passing score in the text box. When setting the score, please remind that the LMS completion score range is from 0 to 100 and that the score value inserted in this field must be an integer. Since LTI standard scores are from 0 to 1, the LMS automatically multiplies the LTI value passed by external tools by 10 to calculate the completion percentage. The learning object will be marked as complete when the score that you set is reached by the user. If desired, you can flag the option to report no score.
You can also add tags to your learning object to improve its searchability in your platform’s global search. You can edit or remove tags at any time, with a limit of 15 tags per learning object (note that this only works for English, Spanish, French, German, Italian and Portuguese content).
Finally, select the view mode for the learning object in the course player: inline, lightbox, new window or browser, or fullscreen. When you’re finished, move to the Additional Info tab on the left side of the page. Choose thumbnail, or upload your own. You can also add a short description in the corresponding text box. When you’re finished, press Save Changes.
The learning object will now appear in the list on the course’s training materials page. From here, you can select the menu item at the end of the learning object’s row. Then, you can edit or delete the object, push the object the Central Repository, or manage the object’s advanced settings or prerequisites. Once a user has completed the learning object and you want to view the tracking of the object, access the course’s report.
Registering the LTI Resource
Once your LTI learning object is added in your course, the Admin or Instructor of the course may need to register the resource (it’s not always mandatory for some learning objects) before your users can play the training material in their platforms. To do so, access the training materials page for the course in which your LTI learning object is imported.
Once on this page, press the Play button to activate le Learner View. Once the course player appears, select the learning object, then follow the steps outlined in your interface to register the object. This process will vary, depending on the resource of your content. Once you’ve completed the registration process, the learning object can be played by all users.
